Ultimate Bug-Out Location = the Asteroid Belt

All bug-out locations have their limitations and some emergency scenarios can encompass the entire planet. The ultimate bug-out location will eventually become – emigrating to the asteroid belt.

Short term bug-out planning involves sudden, unexpected and often forced evacuations. But plenty of preppers have opted for changing their lifestyle and moving to an off-grid location in an area considered to be a “redoubt”, meaning a secure retreat or stronghold. The ultimate secure retreat from all earth based threats is to leave earth and create a stronghold somewhere else.

The asteroid belt offers extremes in many areas:

  • Remote location – more remote than the asteroid belt means going beyond the orbit of Jupiter.
  • Scarce resources – most of the asteroid belt is empty space, the rest is occupied by widely scattered rocks.
  • Cheap/free resources – the rocks that do exist are free to claim and mine, they contain the gases needed to breath and drink and grow food, solar energy only requires the equipment to capture and use it, building materials will come from the leftovers from mining operations.
  • Self sufficient – anybody living out in empty space will have to be completely self sufficient, capable of providing our own air, water, food and energy.
  • Defensible – nobody can sneak up on us and it’s all downhill back to Earth.
  • Freedom – no government to interfere in our lives except what we decide to impose upon ourselves.
  • Cost of transportation and equipment – it will take massive bank loans to accomplish this, but once the loans are paid off with the proceeds from mining valuable minerals from the rocks, the payoff will also be extreme in terms of freedom and self reliance.
