SODIS = Solar Water Disinfection

in Water

Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) is a simple way to purify water using the natural ultraviolet energy from the sun.

SODIS METHOD – How does it work?

The SODIS method is very easy to apply: A transparent PET bottle is cleaned with soap. Then, the bottle is filled with water and placed in full sunlight for at least 6 hours. The water has then been disinfected and can be drunk.

Solar Disinfection

In the laboratory, SODIS has been proven to inactivate the viruses, bacteria, and protozoa that cause diarrheal diseases. Field data have also shown reductions of viruses, bacteria, and protozoa in water from developing countries treated with SODIS. In four randomized, controlled trials, SODIS has resulted in reductions in diarrheal disease incidence ranging from 9-86%.

REQUIREMENTS:
Water clean enough to be purified
(if the water is too cloudy to easily see through, it may need to be pre-filtered)
Clear 2 liter soda bottles or equivalent
6 hours of strong sunlight
