JUMPSTART: Food2 – Needs and Inventory

JUMPSTART is a survival methodology that includes consideration of others around us who are either not aware of the need to prepare for emergencies or have made a decision to lower the priority of that need.

This is the second part of a series of five articles on Food.

First, we need to address the basics of our food supply:

  • 1,500 calories per person per day (minimum)
  • Nutritional balance: protein, carbohydrates, fat, essential amino acids/fatty acids, vitamins, minerals
  • Storage – long shelf life, preservation techniques
  • Cooking energy (see Energy section)
  • Minimize cost

Then we need to take a look at how many calories we need over time. We are using 2 adults @ 1,500 cals/day (adjust to suit your needs):

  • 15 days = 45,000 cals
  • 30 days = 90,000 cals
  • 60 days = 180,000 cals
  • *90 days = 270,000 cals (production threshold)
  • 180 days = 540,000 cals
  • Indefinite = production, storage

Then, we need to figure out the cheapest (and not the most nutritional) means to meet the calorie requirements. Adding grains and beans is often the cheapest. Nutritional needs can be somewhat addressed by diversifying the types of grains and types of beans, but at some point, vegetables and fruits will need to be added also:

  • 15 days – typical pantry contents (dry goods, canned goods)
  • 30 days – double pantry or add 10 lbs grains, 10 lbs beans, 4 lbs peanut butter (PB)
  • 60 days – everything above PLUS add 20 lbs grains, 20 lbs beans and 8 lbs PB more
  • *90 days – 90 lbs grains, 90 lbs beans TOTAL
  • 180 days – 180 lbs grains, 180 lbs beans
  • Indefinite = production + storage/preservation

It should be obvious that these examples do not meet nutritional needs, but are simply presented to show the most cost effective way to reach minimum calorie levels with bulk supplies. Once we have the basic requirements met to prevent starvation, we need to address the issues of nutrition and taste.
